The Pride flag was raised outside Surrey Heath House on Monday 1 August by the Mayor of Surrey Heath, Cllr Helen Whitcroft.
This event celebrates Surrey Heath’s diversity and individuality across the Borough and shows support for our LGBTQ+ Community. Pride in Surrey gifted the council a Progressive Pride flag last year, which was raised and will remain in place throughout August.
The event was attended by guests including the Leader of SHBC, Cllr Alan McClafferty, Deputy Leader of SHBC, Cllr Shaun Garrett, Portfolio Holder for Housing, Safeguarding and Support, Cllr Sarah Jane Croke, SHBC Councillors, SHBC Officers, and members of the local LGBTQ+ community.
Cllr Sarah Jane Croke said; “As we raise the Pride flag we are publicly saying welcome whoever you are and however you identify. The Council will continue to support the LGBTQ+ community and all that has been achieved and will continue to be achieved. We are also looking forward to welcoming the biggest Pride in Surrey Event to our borough on 27 August!”
Cllr Helen Whitcroft said: “It is wonderful to raise the Progressive Pride flag today. This is the fourth year that the Pride flag has flown in Surrey Heath following the passing of a motion brought to the Council by Cllr Morgan Rise and Cllr Croke in February 2020. Through the motion, the Council stated its commitment to supporting the LGBTQ+ community, and reconfirmed its commitment to the Equality Act 2010 in promoting equality and eliminating discrimination for all minority groups within Surrey Heath.”
Lisa Finan-Cooke, Chief Operations Officer of Pride in Surrey, said; “It is always a real pleasure and joy to see the Progressive Pride flag flying at Surrey Heath Borough Council. Over the years we have seen some real commitment to diversity and inclusion and I cannot express to you how meaningful it is to members of the LGBTQ+ community so see that flag proudly flying. This year is particularly important as we bring Pride in Surrey to Camberley. We look forward to welcoming members of the LGBTQ+ community, as well as our allies, to our parade and main event on Saturday 27 of August.”
