The Old Arena Leisure Centre in Camberley is Surrey Heath’s Leading Leisure Provider, Places for People Leisure manage the centre on behalf of Surrey Heath Borough Council and provided over 800,000 customers a year with a committed, safe and enjoyable centre for leisure.
Camberley Arena as we all know opened in 1984 and has been running for many years, just before the centre closes we interview David Cross who was the guy who started Arena Leisure Centre back in 1984.
Interview with David Cross
Camberley Arena holds many years of memory for many people from Camberley, hopeful in the next few months we can release just some of those stories from the staff who worked at the centre.
Over the last few days, before the centre closed to the general public, they were tears of sadness from the staff, some of the interview it became obvious the staff were a family, working closely for many years and even their kids work at the centre.
There are so many stories to tell from all the staff over the years, even this lady Jane who been on the main reception many of you may recognise been working for most of her life.
Camberley Life we like to make sure we get photos of the team as now its part of all our history and at one point in our lives, we visit and enjoy the centre from fitness to swimming and maybe somebody out there even found their long term partner.
This was a fun picture to take because the guy didn’t want his photo to be taken, so we waited and just to our luck his phone rang and he shot off outside to take it, we ambushed him while he was still on the phone that way he couldn’t say no, he just smile and let us take the photo.
The Old Gym
The video above is just a quick shot of Gym refurbishments getting ready for the new gym, you can see how it looked since 1984.
Few months after the refreshments of the new gym the centre closes down to make way for a new centre which is due to open on 1 July 2021.
