SHBC’s Executive has approved plans for the Council’s tennis courts at Frimley Green Recreation Ground and Mytchett Recreation Ground to be redeveloped and lighting installed to enable year-round play. The courts at Watchetts Recreation Ground will also be refurbished to create a floodlit, mixed-use Tennis and Netball facility.
The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) are providing match funding to support major elements of this project. The LTA’s funding also covers the introduction of online gate access technology at each site (successfully piloted at London Road Recreation Ground), along with fencing and net post repairs.
Cllr Rebecca Jennings Evans, Leisure, Culture & Community Portfolio Holder said;
“I am delighted that this project to redevelop our tennis courts has been approved, and we are grateful to the Lawn Tennis Association for the extra funding which makes it possible.
“This project will bring our tennis courts at Frimley Green, Mytchett and Watchetts up to an excellent standard, supporting our commitment to improving access to quality sporting facilities, and helping to achieve our aim of healthier, more active communities.
“I know the additional netball facilities at Watchetts which are part of this scheme will also be welcomed.
“I look forward to seeing the finished results – and in the meantime anyone inspired by Wimbledon can use all the fantastic tennis facilities in the Borough including the upgraded facilities at London Road Recreation Ground!”
