Camberley Be Inspired. High Street, Princess Way and Knoll Walk improvement works update – March 2021

Surrey Heath Borough Council is investing in the future success of Camberley town centre through an ambitious programme of public realm improvements.  These will make the town centre an even better place to visit and enjoy, encourage others to invest in the area and will help to protect jobs.  As the country emerges out of a long period of lockdown, it has never been a more important time to strengthen Camberley’s standing as one of the safest and most accessible places to visit, and support the successful re-opening of the town’s retail, hospitality and leisure businesses.

The Council has secured £3.5million of external funding from Enterprise M3 LEP for the High Street, Princess Way and Knoll Walk improvements which the Council has increased with £900k of funding that it has collected from developers that can only be spent on infrastructure type schemes such as this.  

Dyer and Butler are the construction engineers who are undertaking the works.

High Street

The asphalt road surface is complete and the High Street is now open to general traffic.

The granite pavements and kerbs are now complete. The completed new pavements and kerb surfaces are wide and flat, providing a safer environment for everyone including the elderly, disabled and families.

The new modern lighting columns have been installed.

Tree pits are being prepared for trees to be planted in.  Four trees will be planted along the High Street.  One at the junction with Pembroke Broadway, two in the middle at the junction with Princess Way, and one by the junction to Obelisk Way.

New street furniture, including benches, bins and cycle racks have been installed.

New gates to the High Street have been installed.

Princess Way

Granite paving has been laid on the pavements and walkways.  This work is complete.

The granite steps in Princess Way are complete and also have handrails. The granite planters now have attractive new plants in them.

The new modern lighting columns have been installed.

Street furniture has been installed, including new benches and bins.

Knoll Walk

The walkway is open to pedestrians.

The paving, granite planters, new lighting, planting (including trees) is now complete.

Street furniture, including new benches and bins, have been installed.

The foundations for the green wall are being prepared.  The green wall will comprise of climbing plants, bringing greenery and nature to Knoll Walk

Public art – Streets of Gold.

The public art scheme will in installed in April.

‘Streets of Gold’ brings elements of Camberley’s heritage and history to life in a series of bronze plaques embedded into the walls, pavements and planters across the High Street and Knoll Walk.

M+R (Musson and Retallick) are the artist collaboration who have created the display.  Streets of Gold is a collection of statements, questions and sentiments gathered by M+R from the people of Camberley.  Fragments of these statements become disassembled poetry, ready to be reassembled in any order by viewers of the artwork.

What improvements will the project bring to Camberley?

These works will bring greatly improved road and pavement surfaces to these areas. New trees, plants, lighting and street furniture will also be installed creating a modern, attractive space.

  • Pavements will be constructed from high quality materials and will match the surrounding architecture
  • New improved road surfaces
  • New street lighting
  • New modern street furniture
  • Trees will be planted along the High Street, Princess Way and Knoll Walk as well as evergreens, grasses and bulbs
  • Public art installation celebrating Camberley’s heritage

Why is the top part of the High Street not included in this project?

The top of the High Street from the Obelisk Way junction to London Road will be improved in the future as part of the London Road development.

Camberley Be Safe

To ensure you stay safe in Camberley please observe and follow the social distancing guidelines that are in place in Main Square car park, The Square shopping centre, High Street, Park Street and The Atrium.

When shopping please;

  • Keep to the left as you walk around town
  • Observe social distancing from other shoppers where possible
  • Wear a face covering in the shops, car park stairwells and lifts, unless you are exempt due to a medical condition. Children of 11 and under also do not need to wear face coverings.
  • Observe and follow the social distancing floor stickers and markers throughout the centres and shops
  • Use hand sanitiser when available
  • Spend only the required shopping time in town
