The Platinum Jubilee is celebrated in style at The Square Camberley

The Square, Camberley saw a wonderful turnout for an abundance of events over two weeks in celebration of Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Children of all ages were invited to join in events throughout half term, including arts and crafts, story times and sports and dance workshops (featuring Creation Station, Little Gym, Camberley Library and Secret Stage School).

Little ones also enjoyed having their face painted as a prince, princess or corgi and enjoyed a fancy-dress parade, where Mia won a £30 voucher to be spent at The Party Hub.

The adults also had the opportunity to enjoy some live music on Saturday 4th June, with the band ‘The High Rollers’ performing a two-hour set of modern and traditional classics, including hits from Oasis, Taylor Swift and Queen.

This was followed by the live performance of the Camberley’s Got Talent music show, which saw the audience enjoy everything from ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ on the piano to ‘Up on the Roof’ from David Doddington on vocals and guitar.   Alex Neumann sang the classic ‘Come Fly with Me’, Ryan Maxwell sang ‘Rip Tide’ by Vance Joy whilst strumming his guitar and Caitlyn Jules gave an amazing rendition of ‘Read All About It’.  A taste of the performances can be found on The Square’s Facebook page where the online community has been enjoying them.

The overall winner was Henjila, who was awarded first place for performance of her own original songs and playing the guitar. The competition was judged by Surrey Heath Mayor Councillor Helen Whitcroft and proved to be very difficult to decide!

Ascot Brewery was also on hand all day to provide the refreshment with a fantastic pop-up bar allowing those enjoying the music to relax on what ended up being a very exciting day.

The festivities concluded with a fantastic ‘Dance Through the Decades’ on Saturday 11th June, courtesy of Secret Stage School. Visitors of all ages were encouraged to join workshops exploring the moves of four distinctive eras of dance – the Charleston, Rock ‘n Roll, Disco and the Waltz. Those who attended enjoyed getting involved in such a unique event and very much loved the lively atmosphere.

A royal photo opportunity in Cambridge Square allowed visitors to have their photo taken on the royal balcony with the Queen herself and proved very popular with hundreds of photos being taken. The #GuessTheGuest competition running alongside this on social media saw British celebrities make daily appearances on the balcony, with fun teasers hinted at on Facebook for shoppers to win the cut-outs for themselves. The competition was very successful, with nearly 350 entries in total.  Children and adults also loved using our royal dressing up box and posing regally on the gold throne.

Rhoda Joseph, Centre Manager of The Square said, “We have absolutely loved seeing so many visitors getting involved with our Platinum Jubilee celebrations here at The Square. It has well and truly been a fortnight to remember, with such a range of activities for children and adults alike to be part of. We are looking forward to the summer where we will have more events for everyone to get involved with, so watch this space for more information!”
