SHBC’s ‘Driving Improvement’ campaign focuses on improving key aspects of life in Surrey Heath. The Council is engaging with local people and working with partners to tackle anti-social behaviour and fly-tipping across the Borough and working to protect and enhance the environment, making Surrey Heath an even better place to live.
As winter draws nearer our Greenspace team has been busy across the borough preparing our greenspaces and parks for the cold weather.
This includes clearing overgrown hedges and undergrowth, pruning low hanging branches and bushes and other essential maintenance tasks.
Our aim is to ensure parks and greenspaces remain accessible throughout the colder months to enable residents to benefit from access to nature to improve mental health, as well as being great places for physical exercise and to provide outside space for children to play. We also want our natural spaces to be the optimum habitat for our wildlife including hibernating species.
Tree officers have been maintaining the many wonderful trees in Surrey Heath – we’ve planted more than 2,000 trees already this year to help improve air quality and enhance the borough’s beautiful green spaces and we are planning to plant up to 3,000 more by Spring 2023.
We were fortunate to be joined by fantastic local volunteers last weekend who helped us clear overgrown paths, prune trees and cut back overgrowth at Alphington Pond in Frimley, clearing pathways and opening up views across the pond.
This work improves the environment for people visiting the pond but also for the trees and wildlife already in place by increasing light and ground space.
Thank you to all the volunteers who worked so tirelessly to achieve such an improvement.
Cllr Rebecca Jennings-Evans, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture and Community said;
“The work the Greenspace team undertake at this time of the year is crucial to maintain our biodiversity and optimise the growth and wellbeing of our trees and plants.
The Council is fortunate to be supported in this work by many volunteers. Thank you to each and every volunteer for all the work you do to help keep greenspaces in Surrey Heath healthy for all residents to enjoy, whatever the season.”
