Places Leisure Camberley celebrates its first birthday

In celebration of Places Leisure Camberley’s first anniversary Michael Gove, Member of Parliament for Surrey Heath joined The Mayor of Surrey Heath, Councillor Helen Whitcroft along with representatives from Places Leisure, Surrey Heath Borough Council, Pellikaan Construction and Roberts Limbrick to mark the milestone with a plaque unveiling.

Councillor Rebecca Jennings-Evans, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture & Community, Surrey Heath Borough Council said,

“We are extremely proud of our leisure centre that has seen enormous success and achievements during its first year of operation. From opening under COVID restrictions, to exceeding participation targets along with being nominated for an industry award. It truly has been a fantastic year.

Many thanks to Pellikaan Construction for ensuring the centre was built to schedule, also during the pandemic which brought many additional challenges.  Many thanks also to Roberts Limbrick architects for designing such a stunning landmark building.

The relationship between Surrey Heath Borough Council and Places Leisure really shows what can be achieved when you are working together in partnership, enriching our environment and delivering on the Council’s objectives around health, wellbeing and the Physical Activity Strategy.”

Places Leisure together with their construction partners Pellikaan Construction Ltd and architects Roberts Limbrick were awarded the Design, Build Operate and Maintain Contract by Surrey Heath Borough Council, with the new centre recently being Highly Commended in the New Concept, Design and Build Category at the ukactive leisure industry awards; recognising it to be one of the best designs in the UK.

Dan Walker, Business Development Director at Places Leisure commented, “Having partnered with Surrey Heath Borough Council in supporting the borough’s leisure provision for over 35 years, the award-winning Places Leisure Camberley that replaced the former Arena Leisure Centre is a venue that is close to our hearts and we’re delighted at how the new facility has taken pride of place in its community, experiencing over 80,000 visits each month and welcoming 1,400 children each week learning to swim. With a 6 lane 25m main pool, teaching pool and fairy-tale inspired splashpad, as well as a modern fitness suite, Clip n Climb, luxurious health suite, virtual cycling studio and soft play, the centre really has something for everyone, whatever their interests or abilities.”

As part of the ceremony local St Augustine’s School were gifted by Places Leisure and Pellikaan Construction an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), along with training from Places Leisure qualified staff in its use.

Dan added, “We are in an excellent position to be able to offer this lifesaving training and equipment together with Pellikaan Construction. First aid training and the use of AEDs in early intervention is so important. As part of our good neighbour policy at Places Leisure Camberley we have an AED available for use nearby in the community when needed.”

Places Leisure customers and local residents will also have an opportunity to celebrate during Places Leisure Camberley’s Open day on Sunday 31st July with a whole range of activities planned including pool inflatables and DJs, along with the opportunity to find out more about local services available to them.
