Sophie Humphrey, a Camberley local and final year TV Production student at Solent University, Southampton, has been nominated for Student of the Year at this year’s Rise Awards.
Rise promotes gender diversity in the media sector, celebrates the skills of women across the broadcast industry, and supports the next generation of talent through mentoring and outreach work.
Sophie says: “Rise is a community I plan to be a part of for my whole career, and I feel privileged to be shortlisted for an award with them so early on in my career.”
Sophie, who was born and raised in Camberley, had a false start at another university and began working in retail. It was following the first Covid-19 lockdown that she reconsidered her options and decided to apply to Solent.
Sophie, who was the first in her family to attend university, continues: “I was in denial about higher education after leaving another university, but I always had an interest in TV and was drawn to Solent because of the hands-on nature of the course. I was impressed by the studio space and equipment the university has to offer, as well as the opportunity to work at festivals.”
“I chose Solent because the course is practical, and the University puts an emphasis on gaining industry experience. My time as a student has gone so quickly and it’s been really rewarding working at different events and getting involved with the TV and live events society, Sonar Events. I have really felt a sense of community.”
